A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth with a small post set into the jaw. A crown is attached on top.
Done well, an implant looks and works like a natural tooth. Most of the difference is decided at the planning stage, which is why the consultation matters.
Should you get an implant, or can the tooth be saved?
If the tooth is still in your mouth, the first question is whether it can be kept. Our practice puts your own tooth first: save it if we can, repair it conservatively, and replace it only when it truly can’t be kept.
If you have been told a tooth must come out, read our guide to getting a second opinion before you decide.
What happens at an implant consultation?
An implant consultation at Shin Dental is free and follows five steps.
- Examination and X-rays. Dr. Shin examines the area and the rest of your mouth. Your X-rays are included.
- 3D imaging when needed. A CBCT scan in our office shows the height and width of the bone and the structures near it.
- Your options. Depending on what you need: a single implant, an implant-supported bridge, a full-arch restoration, or an implant overdenture that clips onto two implants.
- Planning. Implants are planned with 3D-guided placement so each one sits where the bone and your bite require. We record the site with a digital scan rather than conventional impressions.
- Costs in writing. You receive an itemized breakdown of the cost, reviewed with you in person before anything starts.
Placement itself is done in a single appointment.
How much does a dental implant cost in NYC?
At US average fees, a standard implant is about $4,344 per tooth and a porcelain crown about $1,399, so the two together come to about $5,700 when billed separately. At Shin Dental, an implant is $3,500–$4,500 per tooth, including placement and the crown.
| What is included | Fee |
|---|---|
| Standard implant, US average per tooth | $4,344 |
| Implant alone, New York State estimate | $2,818–$5,073 (average $3,758) |
| Porcelain crown, US average | $1,399 |
| Shin Dental: implant placement and crown | $3,500–$4,500 per tooth |

Published figures don’t always include the same things. Some quote the implant post alone, others the full tooth with the crown.
What can make an implant cost more?
Extra steps raise the cost. Bone grafting before the implant is the most common one.
Whether you need extra steps, and what they cost, is set out in your written plan before treatment. We also run a limited-time implant offer from time to time.
How long do dental implants last?
About 96% of dental implants are still in place after ten years. That figure comes from a 2019 systematic review of long-term studies (Howe, Keys and Richards, Journal of Dentistry).
The crown on top can wear and may eventually need replacing, as any crown can.
Your own result depends on your gum and bone health, smoking, grinding, medical conditions that affect healing, and regular cleanings. We assess these at the consultation and tell you what we expect in your case.
Can one consultation change your implant plan?
Often, yes. Patients sometimes arrive with a quote for several implants and leave with a different plan: a tooth that can be kept, fewer implants, or a clearer order of treatment.
Others arrive expecting a long, painful process and learn how a minimally invasive approach works (more in our guide for nervous implant patients). Either way, they decide with their own scan in front of them and the full cost in writing.
“My best decision was to get implants done with Dr. Shin. He was very caring, and the whole process was much more painless than I thought it would be. I am able to eat better and don’t have to worry about other people seeing my missing teeth any more. I would highly recommend seeing Dr. Shin for dental work.”
Why do patients trust Dr. Shin and his team?
Dr. Peter Shin grew up watching his father practice dentistry. He runs his own practice the same way: unhurried appointments, clear explanations, and treatment planned around what will last.
- Training: DDS from the New York University College of Dentistry, an Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residency at NYU, and live-surgery implant training.
- Clear costs: every recommended treatment comes with an itemized cost breakdown, reviewed with you in person before anything starts.
- No surprise bills: once treatment is complete, you will not owe anything beyond what was disclosed beforehand.
- Insurance: we are an out-of-network provider for PPO plans, file your claims for you, and can request a pre-determination of benefits before you commit.

Questions patients ask
Is the implant consultation free?
Yes. The consultation at Shin Dental is free, and your exam and X-rays are included.
How much is a dental implant at Shin Dental?
$3,500–$4,500 per tooth, including surgical placement and the crown. Extra steps such as bone grafting, if needed, are priced in your written plan.
How long does the implant process take?
Placement is done in a single appointment. The implant then needs time to bond with the bone before the final crown is placed, usually a few months. Your written plan gives your timeline.
Does getting an implant hurt?
Usually far less than patients expect. Dr. Shin works minimally invasively, disturbing as little tissue as the case allows, and that does the most to determine how you feel afterward.
Does insurance cover implants?
It depends on your plan. We are out of network with PPO plans and file claims for you, and we can request a pre-determination of benefits so you know what your plan will pay before you commit.
